Elections are Coming

Image
Today is a Ugandan public holiday, which means I have the day off. This is a bit of an odd week because elections are coming up. Elections in the past have been pretty peaceful but this year may be a little different. There have been riots in surrounding towns and especially Kampala. Yesterday, the candidate with the biggest following for becoming President, Besigye, was arrested in Kampala. The police then had to use tear gas to try to prevent problems. One of my good friends was working in Kampala that day and was affected by the tear gas. Luckily he is okay and made it back safely to his wife and kids in Jinja. Rugby field in Jinja when Bisegye was in town - Posted by Josh Hamby Corruption is a huge part of the government here. In past elections, other people have won but Museveni has stayed President despite this. It will be interesting to see what happens with the election this time. If Museveni wins again, the supporters of Besigye won’t be happy. If Besigye (or any ot...

Back in Jinja

As I write this, I’m sitting on the porch of our apartment, looking out over the beautiful Lake Victoria. The sounds of life from people living in the fishing slum (Rippon) below us are floating up and filling the air. I’m trying to get an album to play via Apple Music but it keeps cutting in and out because currently the internet just isn’t strong enough. Such is life here. I can’t believe we are already 3 weeks into January. I can’t believe that I had to say goodbye to my family and friends over 2 weeks ago when I flew down to Nashville. I can’t believe how fast that week passed in Nashville. And I can’t believe that it’s been over a week since Heather and I got on a plane (and then another plane, and then another plane) to make the long journey to Uganda. Flying over the desert  Flying over the clouds  The flights were fine; it was just a long trip. We flew from Nashville to Atlanta. Heather flies a lot so we were TSA approved which was awesome. The...

Happy New Year

Image
As I write this, I find it hard to believe that 2015 is coming to an end and 2016 is about to begin. I find it hard to believe that I have been home for 6 months and that in 6 days I will be traveling down to Nashville for a few days before I head to Uganda. In less than 2 weeks I will be back in the country that I called home for a year, the country that I will once again call home for this coming year. It's a bit surreal as I prepare to leave my family and friends once again to go and serve the people that I fell in love with over 7,000 miles away.  My best friends from my alma mater  Saying goodbye to people is never easy. There are no guarantees in this life and each moment that we are allowed to breath is a blessing. Recently, there have been many deaths and medical scares among my friends and it helps remind me that each moment that we have is precious. We should make the best of what we have been given and never take a second for granted. I'm very thankful for th...

Time Flies

Looking back at my blog, I can't believe it's been 6 months to today that I last posted here. Writing blogs has always been a struggle for me and since I've been home, it completely slipped my mind. I apologize! I have quite a few updates for you... Sarah's Graduation I came home mid June for my sister's high school graduation. I was happy that I was able to come home to be with her for such a major event in her life. It hurt my heart to leave the people that I had been with for a year, but I left knowing that I would be going back. I also got to go on vacation with my family which I haven't been able to do in a very long time. It was nice to get away and spend some quality time with them. At the beach When I initially went home, I went with the intention of being home for about a month and a half and then I would be moving to Nashville to do work for HEAL stateside through December. Proverbs 16:9 says "The heart of man plans his way, but...

Seasons

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:           a time to be born, and a time to die;           a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;           a time to kill, and a time to heal;           a time to break down, and a time to build up;           a time to weep, and a time to laugh;           a time to mourn, and a time to dance;           a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;           a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;           a time to seek, and a time to lose;           a time to keep, and a time to cast away;           a time to tear,...
